PROVIDENCE, RI -- At Johnson & Wales University, student-athletes exceed expectations in the classroom and competition, but also in the local community. As the winter season approaches, the JWU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has teamed up with three organizations - the Tomorrow Fund, Crossroads and the Rhode Island Blood Center – to help local residents in need.
For the fourth year in a row, the student-led organization has organized a hat drive for the Tomorrow Fund at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence. The Tomorrow Fund is an independent non-profit charitable organization that provides daily financial and emotional support to children with cancer and their families. SAAC will be accepting new hats at specific ice hockey, basketball and men's volleyball home games. Monetary donations may also be received.
In addition, the softball, women's volleyball and women's rowing teams have adopted a pair of families at the Tomorrow Fund. The teams purchased gifts for the families so they have something to open on Christmas Day.
Crossroads Rhode Island is a nonprofit organization helping the homeless and at-risk individuals and families receive temporary housing with the goal of securing stable homes quickly. Just in time for the holidays, SAAC received a grant from Enterprise large enough to purchase items for four families.
SAAC is also helping promote the Rhode Island Blood Center's blood drive occurring on campus December 11-12. On the Downcity Campus, the blood drive will be in Pepsi Forum from 10 am to 3 pm both days. On the Harborside Campus, Delaney Gym will be open from 12 pm - 7 pm on the 11th and 10 am - 3 pm on the 12th. Donations to the Tomorrow Fund hat drive will also be accepted at these events.
