PROVIDENCE, RI – Johnson & Wales University Vice President for Student Affairs Ron Martel has announced several promotions for the Wildcat athletics department.
Associate Dean of Students Mel Graf, who previously served as Executive Director of Athletics, will return to that dual role to lead the department, replacing Jamie Marcoux, the former Director of Athletics on the Providence campus, who left to assume the Director of Athletics position at Assumption College in early June.
After a 19-year run as head coach of the JWU baseball team, John LaRose has been promoted to Associate Athletics Director. He will be responsible for compliance, academics and staff training with sport oversight. LaRose finished his coaching career with a 429-341-6 record.
Also promoted to Associate Athletics Director was Sports Information Director Michael Smoose. Smoose will continue to run the day-to-day athletic communications operations while also overseeing game management, campus recreation, club sports and intermural and will have sport oversight.
Johnson & Wales is coming off its best academic year with a 55th-place showing in the Learfield Director's Cup. In addition, the Wildcats won the men's and women's GNAC Commissioner's Cups. JWU sponsors 23 varsity athletic programs with nearly 500 student-athletes.
