WINTHROP, Mass. – With the amount of depth that the Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team has, opponents cannot focus on just one player. That depth was on display during a sweep of the JWU Invitational and two players were rewarded for their efforts as Katie Leidhold and Gabbie Scudder were named GNAC Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
It's the first honor for Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass) and Scudder (Ashburn, Va.). JWU has had the Player of the Week for the first two weeks of the 2017 season. Jennelle Thompson from Saint Joseph's was named Libero of the Week
A junior transfer from Franklin Pierce, Leidhold had an all-around standout week, averaging 3.86 kills, 3.00 digs and 0.71 blocks while hitting .364. She produced her second double-double of the year with a match-high 15 kills and 10 digs to go along with four aces in a win over Wheaton and had five kills and seven digs against Gordon.
Scudder was named to the JWU Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 2.45 kills with a .481 hitting percentage. She opened the weekend with eight kills and two blocks against Gordon then finished the tournament with seven kills and a .636 hitting percentage versus Wheaton.
Johnson & Wales is on the road Saturday when it travels to Bowdoin to face the Polar Bears and Bates.
