Wildcats Are Aces in the Classroom

LEXINGTON, Ky. – On the court, 2016 was a tremendous season for the Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team. In the classroom, the Wildcats were just as successful as they were named a recipient of the 2016-17 AVCA Team Academic Award.

In order to earn the award, teams must have a 3.30 cumulative grade point average. The volleyball program posted a 3.43 GPA to rank fourth amongst JWU's women's teams. Johnson & Wales, the only GNAC team to collect the award, has earned the award all three years of Nancy Somera's coaching tenure.

Women's volleyball placed six student-athletes on the GNAC Academic All-Conference Team, which requires a 3.25 GPA and at least sophomore status. Leading the way was junior Monica Cordova with a 3.87 GPA in sports, entertainment and event management.

The Wildcats start the defense of back-to-back GNAC titles on September 1 against Nebraska Wesleyan at the Kean University tournament.
