DARTMOUTH, Mass – Taking on some of the best teams in the region, the Johnson & Wales University women's tennis team won the 3rd Annual Corsair Spring Fling, hosted by UMass Dartmouth. The Wildcats won the event with 21 points.
Like a normal competition, each team match featured three doubles and six singles matches. The difference was each match was one set with no-ad scoring. JWU beat UMD 8-0, lost to Bridgewater State, 4-5, and beat Worcester State, 9-0. BSU finished second with 17 points.
The Wildcats had four of the best singles players and two of the three best doubles teams. Morgan Thompson (Fargo, ND) at number one, Holly Olson (Mukwonago, Wisc.) at number four and Ashley Hartford (Howell, Mich.) at number five all went 3-0 in their singles matches. Madison Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz.) went 2-1 to tie for the top spot at number three.
In doubles, the tandem of Thompson and Luiza Silva Simoes (Cuiaba, Brazil) posted a 2-1 record at number one. Hernandez and Olson were also 2-1 at number two.
Johnson & Wales is back at Roger Williams on Friday to resume their April 7 match. Inclement weather halted the match after doubles with JWU leading 2-1.
