NEWTON, Mass. – For the first time since 2005, the Johnson & Wales University women's soccer team advanced to the GNAC Championship game. The Wildcats will have to wait another year for a title as they lost a 2-0 decision to Lasell on Saturday.
Johnson & Wales ends the season with a 16-4-1 mark. The Lasers improved to 13-5.
Both teams had their opportunities early, but it was Lasell who broke through for the first goal. Carly Zdanek lifted a shot from just outside the box over Johnson & Wales goalie Colleen Lynch (New Milford, Conn.) in the 35th minute. Zdanek beat Lynch eight minutes into the second half for an insurance goal.
The Lasers had a 19-12 advantage in shots and LC goalie Sarah LaClair stopped all eight shots she faced. Lynch stopped seven shots.
Head coach Chris Flint should have another group contend for the GNAC title. He'll have to replace the senior Selner – the number three scorer in school history – but returns two of the GNAC's top three goal scorers in junior Deja Hursey and Cairrao.
