PROVIDENCE, RI – Two overtimes and 10 penalty kicks were not enough to decide a winner in the first round GNAC Tournament women's soccer game between Johnson & Wales University and Albertus Magnus. JWU goalkeeper Colleen Lynch came up with a save then Kyra Selner hit the game-winner as the Wildcats move to the semifinals.
Albertus Magnus: 5-8-2
Johnson & Wales: 15-3-1
Olivia Cairrao (JWU): 1 Goal
Alexya Alves (AMC): 1 Goal
Lexi Finn (AMC): 21 Saves
Each team made its first three shots, but the Falcons' fourth attempt hit the post. JWU had a chance to win on its fifth attempt, but AMC goalie Lexi Finn came up with the save.
Lynch (New Milford, Conn.) stopped the eighth attempt, but Finn answered with a save of her own. Lynch made another save on the 11th attempt then the senior Selner (Sterling, Va.) drilled home the game-winner.
The Falcons packed the defensive end, routinely putting five and six players in the box. Freshman Olivia Cairrao (Bristol, RI) didn't give AMC enough time to set up in the box when she fired a laser from 25-yards out to produce the first score.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Falcons tied the game. Angelina Piccirillo lifted the ball to Alexya Alves and she headed it in for the equalizer.
Finn kept the Falcons in the game, coming up with 21 saves. Johnson & Wales had a 45-2 advantage in overall shots.
Johnson & Wales moves on to face Simmons in the semifinals at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The Wildcats defeated the Sharks, 3-1, during the regular season.
