Wrestling Place Fifth at Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, NY – Backed by five top-six finishes, the Johnson & Wales University wrestling team placed fifth at the Ithaca Invitational on Saturday The Wildcats recorded 98.5 points to finish just behind Springfield.

In his first tournament as a collegiate wrestler, rookie Tommy Wrzesien won the title at 197 pounds. The Hope Valley, RI native beat the top seed Sam Weinger of RIT, 7-3. He posted upsets of three seeded wrestlers, including pins of #2 Michael Gallagher in 3:29 and the seventh seed Malib Pastrana at the 4:56 mark.

Michael Gargano started his day with a 14-8 win over Ithaca's Graden Albert to get into the semifinals. He was stopped one bout short of the finals, but rallied to pin Cooper Fleming of Castleton at the 4:31 mark of the third-place match.

Jordan Robinson lost in the quarterfinals, but worked his way back to take fifth at 141 pounds. Ryan DeVivo pinned Castleton's Alexander Green to get into the semifinals of 184 pounds, but he was beaten in the next round by All-American and top-ranked Jake Ashcroft.

Freshman Darius Joyce worked his way through the consolation draw to take fifth at 149 pounds. Thomas Grippi got a pin in the 149 quarterfinals, but fell in the semifinals before taking sixth. 

The Wildcats are back on the mat Saturday when they travel to the Roger Williams Invitational.
