Wildcats Advance on Day One of Ithaca Invitational

ITHACA, NY — It was a good start to the 2018-19 season for the Johnson & Wales University wrestling team. The Wildcats have a number of wrestlers alive in the main draw of the Ithaca Invitational. 

Johnson & Wales is in fourth place with 33.5 points. The host Bombers lead the way at 42 points.

Matthew Armamento  started his collegiate career with an upset of the number eight seed at 125 pounds and advanced to the quarterfinals. The top seed at 174 pounds, Michael Gargano got going with a pair of opening-round pins. Rookie Jordi Perez also got to the quarterfinals of 174

Seeded second at 149 pounds, Thomas Grippi barely broke a sweat, getting two pins in under 50 seconds. Marvin Cunningham and Darius Joyce also advanced to the quarterfinals.

Johnson & Wales also advanced two wrestlers to the quarterfinals of 141 pounds. Jordan Robinson and Noah Young have moved on to Saturday.

Junior Brady Robin is seeded third at 157 pounds and easily moved on to the quarterfinals. Also joining him in the final eight is Sam Tenaglia.

Tommy Wrzesien  moved on to the quarterfinals of 197 pounds. Ryan DeVivo only wrestled once but it got him to the quarterfinals of 185 pounds.

The tournament concludes on Saturday morning with the first bouts starting at 9:30 a.m.
