#4 Johnson & Wales Win A Trio of Matches

WORCESTER, Mass. – The fourth-ranked Johnson & Wales University wrestling team picked up victories in two different states on Saturday. The Wildcats started the day by beating #16 SUNY Brockport, 18-16, and #21 WPI, 26-9, in Worcester. JWU ended the day by dismantling crosstown rival Rhode Island College, 55-0.

The victories improved Johnson & Wales to 17-2 on the year.

The Wildcats were on the verge of being upset by SUNY Brockport. Fifth-ranked Khamri Thomas got the Wildcats on the board with his 13-3 major decision at 184 pounds, but JWU lost the next four bouts, including a pair of upsets. Joao Vicente stopped the bleeding when he beat Dillon Stowell, 8-6, at 133 pounds.

The Golden Eagles won at 141 and 149 pounds to build a 16-7 lead with three matches to go. Tim Higginson produced an 8-7 win over Corey Farrel at 157 pounds. JWU got a big boost when Adrian Gonzalez came through with a tech fall at 165 pounds. Michael Gargano sealed the team victory with his 7-4 win at 174 pounds.

Johnson & Wales had an easier time with the host Engineers in the second meet. Thomas started with another major decision then #6 Michael DiNardo won 2-0. Jay Albis got his first victory at 125 pounds this season when he posted a 16-0 tech fall against Michael Aquino to start a run of three-straight wins. Higginson and Gonzalez wrapped up the afternoon with their second victories of the day.

The Wildcats faced little resistance against the Anchormen, recording four pins and three tech falls. Senior Watna Cunha got the first pin at 141 pounds when he took down Francisco Roman at the 2:12 mark. Sophomore Cam Altobelli pinned James Smith at the 3:36 point of their 157 bout. Gonzalez won for the third time when he pinned Tim Caplan in just 2:21. Ninth-ranked Jonah Aurelio ended the day with a pin in 3:57 at 285 pounds.

The Wildcats are back at home on Sunday to host the USC Wildcat Open at 9:30 a.m.
