The 27th ranked Johnson & Wales University wrestling team competed at the 2013 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship, hosted by WPI on Saturday. The Wildcats had three wrestlers advance to the championship semifinals and have eight wrestlers still competing for the weekend.
Junior Colin Lenhardt (Gloucester, Va.) recorded a 2-0 mark at 184 pounds while sophomore Sean Prell (Warwick, N.Y.) was a perfect 2-0 on the day at 165 pounds for the Wildcats. Senior Blake McNulty (Framingham, Mass.) also posted a 2-0 mark at 197 pounds to advance to the championship semifinals. Fellow senior Joe Pronk (Marshfield, Mass.) was 2-1 on the day at 125 pounds, including a win via pin fall while freshman Justin Colon (Belleville, N.J.) posted a 2-1 mark at 133 pounds on the day. At 149 pounds, freshman Joey Gaccione (Highpoint, N.J.) went 2-1 to advance to day two of the tournament while senior Connor Nelson (Wakefield, R.I.) tallied a pin fall victory and a major decision win at 197 pounds en route to the 2-1 record for the day. Fellow senior Humphrey Swift (Danbury, Conn.) wraps up the wrestlers still competing for JWU tomorrow with a 2-1 record on the day with both wins coming by way of pin fall.
The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, March 3rd for the second and final day of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship. The top three wrestlers at each weight class will earn bids to the NCAA Division III National Championship on March 15-16 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
