Wrestling Takes Second At NEWA Duals
The wrestling team notched a second place finish at the New England Wrestling Association Dual Meet Championship, hosted by Springfield College on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats were the second seed for the tournament after tying with host Springfield in the coaches vote. JWU then lost the coin-flip to take the second seed.
JWU received a bye in the first round and them posted a commanding 35-13 win over tenth-seed Western New England. The Wildcats than posted a 26-7 win over sixth seeded Southern Maine before falling to host Springfield by a score of 23-10 in the championship match.
JWU senior John Donaleski (Belleville, N.J.) defeated the defending NEWA Champion Billy Cole of Southern Maine by a score of 4-2 from Southern Maine and also picked up one of the three Wildcats wins against Springfield. Freshman 157 pounder Eric Kogel (Sayville, N.Y.) joined the JWU :30 second pin club with a win via pin fall over Western New England's Chris Mastrianni in just :26 seconds.
Freshman Frank Marotti (Fairfield, N.J.), fellow rookie Sean Prell (Warwick, N.Y.) and junior Connor Nelson (Wakefield, R.I.) all had two wins on the day for the Wildcats.
Johnson & Wales is now 12-3 in dual matches for the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, January 27th when they host Rhode Island College in a Pilgrim League contest at 6:00 p.m. A win over the cross-town rival Anchormen will give the Wildcats their eighth straight Pilgrim League Championship.
