Two wrestling standouts competed at the NCAA Division III Championship, hosted by the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse on Friday evening. After the first day of action, JWU has amassed enough points for a 33rd place finish in the 60 team field.
Sophomore William Mulligan (Towaco, N.J.) posted a 2-1 record at 197 pounds while senior All-American Brennan Ward (Waterford, Conn.) had a 2-2 mark at 184 pounds for the Wildcats.
At 184 pounds, Ward, the No. 4 seed, suffered a loss by pin fall in a time of 2:51 against Coe’s Seth Rehn. Ward rebounded, however and posted a pair of victories in the consolation bracket, including a 14-6 major decision against Messiahs’ Timothy Stewart.
At 197 pounds, Mulligan upset sixth seeded Tim Lutke of Centenary with a 3-1 victory in overtime in the first round at that weight class. Mulligan was sent to the consolation round after a loss via pin fall by Mount Union’s Bill Schindel.
In the third consolation round, Mulligan advanced to the All-American round with a 5-4 win against Chad Gregory from Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Ward suffered a 7-4 setback against Elmhurst’s Josef Rau and finished his senior campaign with an impressive 33-4 record.
Mulligan will return to action on Saturday, March 12th at 10:00 a.m. when he takes on Sam Johnson of Dubuque.
