WINTHROP, Mass. – There have been a lot of talented freshmen on the Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team, but it's been four years since a Wildcat rookie was recognized by the GNAC. That ended Monday when Dani Lydecker was named GNAC Rookie of the Week.
Prior to the Valley Cottage, NY, native earning the award, Lydia Knapp on March 18, 2014 was the last JWU player named the league's top rookie. Eleanor Garvey of Mount Ida and Simmons' Kasey Fries were selected GNAC Goalkeeper and Player of the Week, respectively.
Lydecker scored a goal in the first three games of her collegiate career, totaling 10 points, eight ground balls and 10 draw controls in a 2-1 week. The week was highlighted by a six-goal game in the win at Chapman. She started her career with two goals against UMass Dartmouth and had two in a loss to Occidental.
JWU's home opener against Fitchburg State on Thursday was postponed until April 23. The Wildcats are back on the field Saturday at Salve Regina.
