NEWTON, Mass. – The rematch of last year's GNAC women's lacrosse championship game went to Johnson & Wales University. The Wildcats outscored Lasell, 9-6, in the second half on their way to winning the contest, 14-13.
After taking a 4-3 lead on a Raquel Pederzani's (Coventry, RI) goal, Johnson & Wales went 15 minutes without scoring as the Lasers jumped out to a 7-4 lead on their way to a 7-5 halftime advantage.
JWU showed why it's a second-half team by scoring six-straight goals to take a 13-9 advantage. Alexandra Anton (Dix Hills, NY) and Gabrielle Vasile (Milford, Mass.) both scored two of their three goals during that run. Kathy Ensor (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the eventual winning goal with 9:21 remaining in the contest.
The two teams were evenly matched with JWU holding a 29-27 advantage in shots, but the Lasers had the 17-15 margin in ground balls. JWU's defense played well in transition, limiting Lasell to 8-of-14 clears. Defender Elizabeth Tonn (Wantagh, NY) limited the GNAC's leading scorer Taylor Yandow to just two goals.
Johnson & Wales starts a four-game home stand on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game against Simmons.
