PROVIDENCE, RI – A late charge came up just short for the Johnson & Wales University women's lacrosse team on Thursday. The Wildcats got within a goal in the final minute of play, but couldn't pull even as JWU lost to visiting Westfield State University, 13-12.
Johnson & Wales grabbed a 4-3 lead on Kathy Ensor's (St. Louis, Mo.) goal at the 11:05 mark. Syd Lambert notched two of her game-high four goals during a 4-0 run by the Owls to take a 7-4 lead. Attacker Juliana Giello (Warwick, NY) scored two of her team-best three goals during that stretch, including one with 54 seconds left in the half to tie the game at 7-7. Lambert tallied another just before the end of the half to give the Owls an 8-7 lead.
The Wildcats scored three times in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to get a 10-9 lead on Alexandra Anton's (Dix Hills, NY) second goal of the game at the 23:07 mark. Unfortunately, JWU wouldn't score for the next 20 minutes as Westfield State established a 13-10 lead on Elizabeth Navoni's second goal.
Lydia Knapp (Glens Falls, NY) and Madeline Bishara (Saunderstown, RI) scored in the final two minutes but JWU couldn't win the last draw control as the Owls ran out the clock. WSU had a 16-11 advantage in draw controls. The Wildcats were whistled for 42 fouls, compared to 26 by the visitors.
