Women's Lacrosse Wins 2OT Thriller

The women's lacrosse team scored once in each overtime period to top Rivier in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon. Freshmen Megan Brown (Great Mills, Md.) buried the game-winner in 2OT to propel the Wildcats to victory.

JWU went up 6-2 with 8:44 remaining in the first half after a pass from Jessica Schmell (Coopersburg, Pa.) gave Kayla Smith (Eastham, Mass.) an opportunity to net her second goal of the day. The two teams traded goals twice before Rivier scored the last two of the half to make the score 8-6 heading into the locker room.

Three quick goals to begin the second half by Lydia Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y.), Toni-Anne Mulé (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and Smith boosted the Wildcats to a five goal lead, 11-6, with over 18 minutes left in regulation. The Raiders climbed back into the game with four unanswered goals, including back-to-back tallies by Elena Reilly, bringing the score to 11-10. Knapp gave JWU a two goal advantage once more before Rebecca Wickens and Amanda Wickens combined for the next three goals to give the Raiders their second lead of the day. Knapp played the hero for the Wildcats in regulation, finding the back of the net for the fifth time, with 1:37 left, to tie things up at 13-13 and send the contest into overtime.

In the first overtime, Knapp scored her sixth and final goal to give JWU a lead that was then relinquished when Paxton LaRocque scored her only goal on the day for the Raiders. Brown used a man-up opportunity to produce the final goal of the afternoon, giving the Wildcats the thrilling victory in double overtime.

Junior Genevieve Giampietro (Meriden, Conn.) made 12 saves for the Wildcats while Danielle Moran made seven saves in the setback for the Raiders.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in GNAC action while Rivier falls to 5-4-1 and 3-2-1 in conference play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, April 12th when they travel to Boston to take on Simmons in a GNAC contest beginning at 11:00 a.m.
