GORHAM, Maine – One goal was all the Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey team needed for a victory on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats won for the third time in four games when they beat Southern Maine, 1-0.
Southern Maine: 3-8
Johnson & Wales: 3-6-3
USM: Britney Evangelista (0-6-0) 35 Saves, 1 Goal
JWU: Kami Weiner (3-6-3), 9 Saves, 0 Goals
Kaitlin Irvine: 1 goal
Neither team could get on the scoreboard through the first two periods. The Wildcats got the only goal of the game just 4:22 into the third period when Kaitlin Irvine (Alexandria Bay, N.Y.) poked in the rebound for her third goal in two games.
The Johnson & Wales defense did a great job limiting the Huskies' scoring opportunities. USM only got nine shots on goal, compared to 36 by the Wildcats, and JWU goalie Kami Weiner (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) stopped all nine.
Johnson & Wales plays its final game before the New Year on Saturday when it travels to Bowdoin for a 1 p.m. faceoff.
