CANTON, NY – After spotting SUNY Canton three goals in the first period, the Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey offense came alive. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the Wildcats dropped a 5-3 decision to the Roos on Saturday.
The Wildcats fell to 4-19 overall, 4-8 in the Colonial Hockey Conference. SUNY Canton improved to 7-4-1 in the league, 7-15-1 overall.
The Roos got on the board just 1:55 in the game when Jessica Pele scored the first of her two goals. SUNY Canton added a short-handed goal at the 9:01 mark then another five minutes later to go up 3-0 at the intermission.
Johnson & Wales tallied its first goal two minutes into the second period when Alexis Harle (Calgary, Alberta) scored with assists to Kathy Ensor (St. Louis, Mo.) and Victoria Perez (Livonia, Mich.). The Roos answered with two goals, but Summer Britton (Fairbanks, Alaska) scored her team-leading ninth goal on the power play with 1:56 left to play in the second. Tamara Bowden (Weymouth, Mass.) added a goal 5:29 in the third period, but the Wildcats' couldn't complete the comeback.
JWU goaltender Kami Weiner (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) stopped 38 shots, but was saddled with the loss as her record fell to 4-19. Rebecca DiNardo stopped 17 Wildcats shots to get the victory.
The Wildcats finish the regular season next weekend when they play host to Morrisville State. Puck drops for game one on Friday at 6:05 pm.
