REISTERSTOWN, Md. – In a season of first, history was made for the Johnson & Wales University women's ice hockey team on Friday. Twelve seconds into the second period, Alexis Harle scored the first goal for the Wildcats as an NCAA Division III program. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough for JWU to get its first win as it fell 8-1 the Mustangs.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 0-5 overall and 0-3 in the Colonial Hockey Conference. Stevenson improved to 5-0, 3-0 in the CHC.
Trailing 1-0, the Wildcats won the faceoff and dumped the puck into the Mustangs' zone. Caitlin Sweet (Calgary, Alberta) got the puck to Kathy Ensor (St. Louis, Mo.) who centered it to Harle (Calgary, Alberta) for a one-timer that beat the SU goalie on the right-hand side. The team remained tied for the next eight minutes until the Mustangs responded by scoring five goals in the final 11 minutes of the period.
For the fourth time this season, Johnson & Wales goalie Kami Weiner (Elk Grove, Ill.) turned away more than 50 shots as she made 56 saves. Harle and Ensor took eight of the Wildcats' 11 shots.
Johnson & Wales and Stevenson will square off for a second time on Saturday when the two teams drop the puck at 5:15 p.m.
