WINTHROP, Mass. – With only five returning players for the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team, there are opportunities for newcomers to earn playing time. Freshman Dede Stevenson has made the most of her chances and was recently named GNAC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week by the conference.
It's the first honor of the Hartford, Conn. native's career and the first for JWU this season. Rah Rah Thompson from Albertus Magnus and Rivier's Kaylee Kacavas shared Player of the Week.
In three games last week, Stevenson averaged 14.3 points and 4.7 rebounds. She had a season-best 30 points against Brandeis and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Johnson & Wales is home on Wednesday to face Trinity at 7 p.m.
