Women's Basketball Suffers 85-49 Setback Against St. Joseph's of Maine
The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team suffered a 85-49 setback against St. Joseph's of Maine in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
JWU was paced by freshman Natalie DiCocco (Media, Pa.) with 12 points while junior Chrissy Toth (Queens, N.Y.) also had 10 points in the setback for the Wildcats.
St. Joseph's was led by sophomore Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) with 26 points and seven rebounds while senior Ashley Geel (St. George, Maine) had 14 points and eight boards for the Monks. Junior Abby Young (North Yarmouth, Maine) was also in double-figures with 12 points in the victory.
St. Joseph's came out strong and jumped out to a 17-4 lead after a pair of free throws by Young with 13:55 left in the first half. Johnson & Wales then used a 10-1 run, capped by a three-point play by DiCocco to cut the lead to 18-14 with 11:27 on the clock. The visiting Monks led 34-23 before closing out the half on a 14-2 run to lead 48-25 heading into the locker room at halftime. The Monks shot 62.1% from the field and had 28 of their 48 points in the paint for the half.
It was more of the same in the second half as St. Joseph's continued to build on their lead before cruising to the 85-49 victory. The Monks shot 64.7% from the field for the game with a 42-24 rebounding advantage.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 7-11 overall and 3-3 in the GNAC while St. Joseph's of Maine improves to 11-5 on the year and 5-0 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, January 26th when they travel to St. Joseph's of Connecticut for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at 7:00 p.m.
