Women’s Basketball Defeats Anna Maria, 58-48
The women's basketball notched a 58-48 victory over Anna Maria in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Saturday afternoon.
JWU was paced by sophomore Jenna Juron (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) with 24 points and three rebounds while freshman Natalie DiCocco (Media, Pa.) tallied 15 points and five boards in the victory for the Wildcats.
Anna Maria was led by Alison McCarthy with 12 points and four rebounds while Samantha Ashton added 11 points and six boards in the setback for the AMCats.
The two teams traded leads throughout the entire first half with the score tied six times. JWU took the 23-21 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
With the score tied 31-31 in the early stages of the second half, JWU used a 7-0 run to take the 38-31 lead on a layup by DiCocco with 14:28 left on the clock. The Wildcats built on their lead and took their first double-figure advantage on a free throw by DiCocco to make the score 56-46 with just under four minutes left. The Wildcats would then hold on for the 58-48 victory.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 6-9 for the year and 2-1 in the GNAC while Anna Maria falls to 5-9 on the season and 1-2 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Monday, January 16th when they travel to Albertus Magnus for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at 1:00 p.m.
