Women’s Basketball Falls To Gordon, 41-40
The women's basketball team suffered a 41-40 setback against Gordon in a non-conference contest at the Harborside RAC on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half with Johnson & Wales taking a 10-9 lead into the locker room at halftime. JWU shot just 19.0% from the field while Gordon was held to just 15.4% from the floor.
Johnson & Wales took control of the action in the early stages of the second half and led 23-19 on a jumper by sophomore Jenna Juron (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) with 13:52 left on the clock. Gordon responded, however and took a 32-33 lead on a jumper by senior Catey Marshall (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) with 4:40 remaining. The two teams then traded leads with JWU holding a 40-39 advantage with just under two minutes left. After missed opportunities by both teams, Marshall grabbed a rebound and hit a put back layup with three tenths of a second on the clock to give the visiting Lions the 41-40 victory.
Freshman Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, N.J.) led the way for Gordon with 14 points and 16 rebounds while Marshall had six points, seven rebounds and three assists in the win for the Lions. Juron paced JWU with 13 points, two rebounds and two assists while senior Kaitlyn Lefort (Pawtucket, R.I.) and junior Marina Millian (Chester, N.Y.) each had six points in the setback for the Wildcats.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 3-8 for the year while Gordon improves to 5-4 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, January 5th when they host Plymouth State in a non-conference contest at 6:00 p.m.
