Women’s Basketball Drops 58-52 Decision To Mitchell

The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team suffered a 58-52 setback against Mitchell in a non-conference contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales was led by sophomore Marina Millian (Chester, N.Y.) who scored 21 points and added eight rebounds while senior Morgan Wilson (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) had 15 points, five boards and two assists in the loss for the Wildcats.

Mitchell senior Alix O'Neil (New London, Conn.) scored a game-high 34 points and added 13 rebounds in the victory.  Junior Bianca Young (Bridgeport, Conn.) had seven points and six boards for the Mariners.

The two teams traded baskets early with the score tied 14-14 with 8:38 left in the first half.  Mitchell then went on a 9-2 run, capped by a free throw by senior Kailee Hyde (Derby, Conn.) with 2:04 left in the half to take the 23-16 lead.  The Mariners would take a 27-20 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.

Mitchell extended their lead in the second half and led by as many as 16 after a pair of free throws by O'Neil made the score 48-32.  Johnson & Wales chipped away at the lead and pulled within four when a layup by sophomore Ayla Walter (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) put the score at 56-52 with :33 left on the clock.  That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Mitchell held on for the 58-52 victory.

With the loss JWU is now 1-4 for the season while Mitchell improves to 3-3 on the year.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, December 11th when they travel to Nichols for a non-conference contest, starting at 4:300 p.m.
