PROVIDENCE, RI – The battle of the top two softball teams in the GNAC went to Johnson & Wales University. Visiting Albertus Magnus scored first in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader, but the Wildcats responded as they won the opener, 8-6, then took the nightcap, 8-1.
Albertus Magnus: 21-9, 9-3 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 24-6, 16-0 GNAC
Emily Gorecki (JWU): 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI (GM 1)
Katie Rufo (JWU): 2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI (GM 1)
Kristin Frost (JWU): 3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI (GM 2)
Melissa Castillo (AMC): 3-4, 1 R, 2 RBI (GM 1)
The two teams combined for four home runs in the opener. AMC's Brianna Whitfield got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the first. Shortstop Brenna DuPerry (Cranston, RI) put the Wildcats ahead 4-2 on a three-run home run in the second.
Designated hitter Katie Rufo (Natick, Mass.) led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run as JWU extended its lead to 8-3. Rufo was one of three Wildcats to pick up a pair of hits in the opener.
The Falcons didn't go down without a fight in the seventh. Melissa Castillo started a string of three-straight RBI singles – part of her game-high three hits - to pull AMC within 8-6. Right-hander Caitlin Kiene (South Windsor, Conn.) came on to get the final out and record the save.
Laura Anderson started the nightcap with another home run in the top of the first. However, that would be the only run the Falcons would get against JWU starter Emily Gundrum (Bethlehem, Pa.). She worked five and two-thirds innings, giving up just the one run on four hits.
JWU evened the game in the first on a Kristin Frost (Pearl City, Hawaii) RBI single. The rookie belted a solo home run in the fifth. Frost had a game-high three hits. Diana Amendolara (Newtown, Pa.) capped a four-run fourth inning with a two-run home run.
The Wildcats continue their final regular season homestand on Saturday when they take on Emmanuel in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
