BRISTOL, RI – The Johnson & Wales University softball team got off to a fast start at Roger Williams on Thursday, but couldn't hold off a late rally by the Hawks. Roger Williams scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Wildcats, 7-6.
Freshman centerfielder Kristin Frost (Pearl City, Hawaii) got the scoring started in the first with an RBI double. The Hawks answered with three in the bottom of the first, but JWU regained the lead with three runs of their own in the second. Brenna DuPerry (Cranston, RI) ripped a two-run double then scored on a passed ball.
The Wildcats pounded out plenty of hits – seven different players had a pair of hits – but they couldn't get the runs across in key situations. Johnson & Wales left eight runners on base, including two each in the fifth and sixth innings. A two-run double by Rachel Wandzilak scored the eventual winning run in the sixth inning.
Johnson & Wales goes on the road Saturday for a 2 p.m. GNAC doubleheader at Simmons
