PROVIDENCE – A dramatic finish to the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader with Framingham State couldn't carry the Johnson & Wales University softball to the sweep. The Wildcats won the first contest, 3-2, but dropped the second game, 9-2.
Framingham State: 10-6
Johnson & Wales: 10-5
JWU pitcher Jennifer Corona (Middle Island, NY) had her scoreless innings streak snapped at 15 as the Rams tied game one with two runs in the top of the seventh. Corona didn't give up a hit until the fourth inning, snapping her streak of 12-straight innings without allowing a hit.
With JWU down to its last out, freshman Kristin Frost (Pearl City, Hawaii) cranked a walk-off solo home run to left field to win the game.
After setting the JWU career home run record on Saturday, Emily Gorecki (Bremerton, Wash.) extended her mark with a solo shot in the sixth. She jacked her third home run in as many games with a solo homer in the fourth inning of game two.
The two teams exchanged runs in the third inning of game two before the Rams' offense exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth. Framingham State got three hits and a sacrifice fly to establish a lead it would not relinquish. FSU's Marissa Flynn and Kayla Finacchiaro each went 3-for-4.
Jessica Pietersen gave up two runs in seven innings to get the win in the circle. JWU's Noelle Weiss (Hartland, Wisc.) took the loss after giving up four runs in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Johnson & Wales is on the road Saturday when it travels to Mount Ida for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
