Softball Routes Cabrini and Adrian

CLERMONT, Fla. – A day off proved to be just what the Johnson & Wales University softball team needed. Two days after only scoring two runs in 14 innings, the Wildcats exploded for 24 runs in a pair of victories on Friday. The Wildcats defeated Cabrini 11-6 then whooped up on Adrian 13-5 in five innings.

Of Note:
In the opener against Cabrini, Johnson & Wales extended its 2-1 lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Diana Amendolara (Newtown, Pa.) drove in two of her three runs with a single to right field that scored Meghan Gavin (Wallingford, Conn.) and Alex Fantasia (Framingham, Mass.).

Amendolara got the scoring started during a four-run sixth inning as her single plated Fantasia. Amendolara went 3-5 with a trio of RBIs. Fantasia scored three runs while Ally Mishol (Longmeadow, Mass.) crossed home plate twice as part of her 2-3 day. Emily Gorecki (Bremerton, Wash.) went 2-4 with a run scored in her 2017 debut.

Emily Gundrum (Bethlehem, Pa.) gave up two runs with four strikeouts in five innings for her first win of the year. Jennifer Corona (Middle Island, NY) got the Wildcats out of a sixth-inning jam for her first save.

During the second inning against Adrian, the Wildcats surgically dismantled the Bulldogs with six singles in a row. Sophomore Kayla McKinnon (Cambridge, Mass.) capped the scoring with a two-run single to right field.

Freshman Kristin Frost (Pearl City, Hawaii) drove in two runs in the third with a double and two more in the fourth on a single as she went 3-3 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Amendolara and Gavin each had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Outside of a shaky third inning in which she gave up five runs, Corona was in complete control of the circle. She struck out five batters to pick up her second win of the season.
