Softball Eliminated From GNAC Tournament
The softball team was eliminated from the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. In the double-elimination round, JWU the No. 6 seed for the tournament, posted a 5-4 win over top-seeded Emerson to knock out the Lions. JWU then suffered a hard fought 4-3 loss in extra innings against St. Joseph of Connecticut to round out their tournament run.
In the win over Emerson, the host Lions held the 4-1 lead heading into the last at bat for JWU. In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Taylor Cwalinski (Jackson, N.J.) led off with a single. The Wildcats cut the lead to 4-2 on an RBI single by junior Korissa Bailey (Pelham, N.H.). JWU then upset the top-seeded Emerson Lions when a three-run triple by sophomore Heather Imperatore (Westerly, R.I.) gave JWU the 5-4 victory. Bailey was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the win for JWU while junior Amy Fish (Oxford, Mass.) and freshman Kelsey Dunn (Silver Spring, Md.) each had two hits in the win for the Wildcats.
In the second game of the day, JWU trailed 3-1 before a two-run double by freshman Robyn Ziegler (Doylestown, Pa.) knotted the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning. It would not be enough, however as St Joseph tallied an unearned run in the eighth to take the 4-3 victory. Junior Lauren Lomaanoco (Southampton, N.J) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI in the loss for JWU.
Johnson & Wales wrapped up the 2011 campaign with a school record 20 wins, finishing with a 20-23 record on the year.
