BOSTON – The Johnson & Wales University sailing team wasn't immune to the inclement weather as both of its regattas over the weekend were shortened to one-day events. Once they got on the water, the Wildcats had good showings at both the BU Trophy and Central Series III races on the Charles River.
Johnson & Wales placed eighth at the BU Trophy with 94 points, finishing a point ahead of Stanford and just four points behind Harvard. Topped by a second-place finish in the fifth race, the A boat of Peter Sterflinger (Centerport, N.Y.) and Caoilinn Boyle (Plymouth, Mass.) placed seventh. The B boat of Thomas Pluchino (Centerport, N.Y. and Hans Bergston (Cumberland, RI) had its best showing in the fourth race when they took fifth on their way to an overall ninth-place finish.
Just down the way, the Wildcats took 13th at the Central Series III competition. JWU came in two points ahead of Bates and just a few points behind Wesleyan. Captaining the A boat was Brett Doty (Holtsville, NY) with Michael Campbell (Hinsdale, NH) as the crew. Their best race was a seventh-place finish in the third race. The B boat was captained by Marina Merchant (Queensbury, NY) and Marisa Sannino (Cutchogue, NY) while Lily Doolin (Beverly Hills, Mich.) served as the crew.
Next up for Johnson & Wales is the New England Dinghy Tournament, hosted by Salve Regina on April 8-9.
