The men's volleyball team posted a thrilling 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 16-25, 25-23, 15-13) win over Southern Vermont in a non-conference contest on the road on Thursday night.
Junior Ryan Kennedy (West Barnstable, Mass.) led the way for Johnson & Wales with a match-high 22 kills while sophomore Kyle MacKnight (Northport, N.Y.) recorded a contest-best 17 digs to go with seven kills for the Wildcats. Senior Don Dias (Scituate, R.I.) added 16 kills, and junior Kyle Eva (Charlestown, R.I.) chipped in with 10 kills and six total blocks . Sophomore setter J.J. Bessette (Coventry, R.I.) facilitated the JWU offense with 53 assists while adding eight digs in the victory.
SVC was led by freshman Stewart Ramirez (Los Angeles, Calif.) who had 15 kills to go with six digs and four total blocks. Senior Scott Fitzgerald (Queensbury, N.Y.) followed with 14 kills, nine digs and two block assists while classmate Tino Escovedo (Fresno, Calif.) added a team-best 15 digs. Senior Herson Canta (Lagunitas, Calif.) had 52 in the loss for the Mountaineers.
Both teams were efficient on the night as Johnson & Wales registered a .397 hitting percentage with eight attacking errors on 156 swings, edging SVC's .347 percentage that came from only committing seven hitting errors on 144 total attempts.
With the win Johnson & Wales is now 12-2 on the year while Southern Vermont falls to 7-4 on the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 21st when they travel to Lasell for a GNAC contest starting at 1:00 p.m.
