PROVIDENCE, RI – One goal was all the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team needed to pick up a victory on Sunday. The Wildcats got a first-half goal then played good defense in the final 45 minutes to defeat visiting Salve Regina, 1-0.
Salve Regina: 1-0
Johnson & Wales: 1-0
Teagan Drake (JWU): 1 goal
Michael Payan (SRU): 4 saves
Johnson & Wales struck for the first goal in the 29th minute of the first half. Yohann Assouramou (Cotonou, Benin) slid a pass to Teagan Drake (Westbury, Vt.) and he blasted it into the net for his second goal in as many games.
A strong tail wind in the second-half benefited Salve Regina as the Seahawks had numerous scoring chances. Five of SRU's shots came in the final 45 minutes, but JWU goalkeeper Nicholas Mancini (Toms Rivier, N.J.) and the Wildcat defense kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard. Dating back to last year, Mancini has not allowed a goal in his last 241 minutes.
Overall, the Wildcats had a 14-8 advantage in shots, but 10 came in the first half. The Seahawks had a decisive 12-5 margin in corner kicks.
Johnson & Wales returns to the pitch on Wednesday to take on Coast Guard at 6:30 p.m.
