Men’s Soccer Falls To RIC, 4-3 In Overtime

Senior Hector Espildora Fortuno (Malaga, Spain) scored a hat trick to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 4-3 overtime victory against Johnson & Wales in a non-conference men's soccer contest at Pierce Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Adam Shafer (Corning, N.Y.) put JWU on the board early when he tallied his first goal of the season, putting in a pass from junior Alex Buendo (East Longmeadow, Mass.) just 3:40 into the game.  The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 in the 18th minute after freshman O'Kyle Corridon (Selden, N.Y.) fed a lead pass to fellow rookie Dustin Hughes (Holden, Mass.).  Hughes then found a streaking Ray Durski (Monroe, Mass.) who buried the shot into the back of the net.  Rhode Island College responded at the 22:13 mark when senior Bruno Costa (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored on a pass from junior Tucker Shepard (Tiverton, R.I.) to cut the lead to 2-1.  The two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the half before JWU scored again in the last minute of the stanza when Shafer notched his second goal of the game, heading in a crossing pass from freshman Kyle Metz (St. James, N.Y.) to give the Wildcats the 3-1 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, it was all Rhode Island College as Fortuno scored his first goal of the game on a penalty kick to make the score 3-2 at the 61:25 mark.  Fortuno struck again in the 76th minute as he notched an unassisted goal after splitting a pair of JWU defenders to knot the game at 3-3.  Regulation ended in a deadlock with RIC holding an 18-13 advantage in shots for the game.  In the overtime period, both teams had solid chances before Fortuno capped off his hat trick after he headed in a cross from freshman Patrick LaRoche (Gardner, Mass.) at the 98:18 mark to give RIC the 4-3 victory.

Freshman Ryan Dzierawski (Oakland, Mich.) notched six saves in the setback for JWU while senior Nick Clark (East Bridgewater, Mass.) notched three stops in the win for RIC.

With the loss Johnson & Wales wraps up the 2011 season with a 5-11-2 mark while Rhode Island College is now 10-7 for the year.
