NEWTON, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University men's lacrosse team couldn't sustain its fast start or complete a furious fourth-quarter comeback at Mount Ida on Thursday. The Wildcats dropped a 16-13 decision to the Mustangs in the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament.
Mount Ida: 14-4
Johnson & Wales: 12-7
Johnson & Wales jumped out to a 5-1 lead thanks to a pair of Max Stone (Burlington, Conn.) goals. Sam Sears (Baltimore, Md.) scored with just under two minutes remaining to push the Wildcats' lead to 7-3 after one quarter.
The Mustangs captured the lead by outscoring the Wildcats, 10-3, in the second and third quarters.
Stone and Eric Russo (West Grove, Pa.) scored their team-leading third goals in the final three minutes of the game, but JWU couldn't finish the comeback.
Johnson & Wales had a 20-12 advantage in faceoffs, but Mount Ida outshot the Wildcats, 45-39. MIC goalie Cam Hayward came up with 16 saves.
Head coach Nick Coppola should have another strong team in 2018 as he brings back his top three scorers in Stone, Russo and Sears.
