PROVIDENCE, RI – Close games are becoming the norm between the Johnson & Wales University men's lacrosse team and Mount Ida College. The Mustangs got the go-ahead goal halfway through the fourth quarter as they beat the Wildcats, 9-8, on Tuesday.
Johnson & Wales spotted Mount Ida a five-goal lead in the first quarter. Jon Berry scored the first three goals – part of his game-high four goals - then Kyle Ton added two more to put the Mustangs up 5-0.
The Wildcats responded with a 6-1 run over the next two quarters to tie the game at 6-6. Erik Lindaas (Milford, Pa) scored both of his goals during that stretch and Sam Sears (Baltimore, Md.) found the back of the net to tie the game with 4:08 left in the third quarter.
The rest of the game, every time Mount Ida pulled ahead, the Wildcat had an answer, except at the end. Max Stone (Burlington, Conn.) scored his second goal of the night at the 12:45 mark of the fourth quarter to bring JWU back from a two-goal deficit. Wyatt Sullivan scored the eventual game-winner with 7:40 in remaining the game.
The Mustangs clamped down on the Wildcats defensively as JWU did not get a shot off in the final five minutes. Mount Ida had a 42-35 edge in shots and forced Johnson & Wales into 17 turnovers. JWU goalie Bradley Morris (Bayport, NY) made 17 saves.
The Wildcats go on the road Saturday to take on St. Joseph's at 1 p.m.
