BOSTON – Since head coach Nick Coppola started the Johnson & Wales University men's lacrosse program four years ago, Emmanuel has been the one team that has been the thorn in JWU's side. The Wildcats cleared that hurdle on Saturday as they defeated the Saints, 11-10.
Eric Russo (West Grove, Pa.) scored two goals and assisted on another as JWU took an 8-6 advantage with five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Ben Farrell (Downingtown, Pa.) put the Wildcats up 10-8 then when Emmanuel pulled within a goal, 10-9, with 48 seconds remaining, he scored his career-high fifth goal to secure the victory. Russo had two goals and two assists and Max Stone (Burlington, Conn.) added two goals and an assist.
Coming up big was freshman goalie Bradley Morris (Bayport, NY) as he made 10 saves including the Saints' desperation shot as time expired. Emmanuel outshot Johnson & Wales, 53-31, and had a 38-28 advantage in ground balls.
The Wildcats are on the road Tuesday when they travel to Lasell for a 4 p.m. contest.
