Men's Lacrosse Starts GNAC Play With 13-7 Win Over Rivier
PROVIDENCE, RI– A combination of strong offense and defense in the second and third quarters guided the Johnson & Wales University men's lacrosse team to victory. The Wildcats scored 10 of their goals in the middle two frames on their way to a 13-7 win against Rivier on Saturday in the GNAC opener for both teams.
Rivier: 4-4, 0-1 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 5-4, 1-0 GNAC
Ryan Williams scored the first of his team-high three goals to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Sean Brady was next on the team two goals.
From there it was all Johnson & Wales as the Wildcats scored seven-straight goals to take an 8-2 lead on Eric Russo's (West Grove, Pa.) goal at the 12:01 mark of the third quarter. Russo led all players with six points on two goals and four assists.
The junior tandem of Max Stone (Burlington, Conn.) and Sam Sears (Baltimore, Md.) scored seven of the 12 goals during a 12-1 JWU run. Sears' fourth tally at the 12:26 mark of the fourth quarter staked the Wildcats to a 13-3 lead. Sears and Stone scored a game-high four goals.
Sophomore Hunter Guzzo (Wantage, NJ) won 13-of-19 faceoffs as part of JWU's 15-8 advantage in faceoff wins. JWU also had a 33-23 lead in ground balls and 47-33 in shots. Goalie Bradley Morris (Bayport, NY) made 13 saves and tied his season-low with seven goals allowed to pick up his fifth win.
Johnson & Wales returns to the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Monday to take on Regis at 4 p.m.
