Hockey Falls To Curry, 5-4

The Johnson & Wales University hockey team fell to Curry, 5-4 on the road in an ECAC Northeast contest on Saturday evening. 

Curry took the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Connor Hendry with assists to Jordan Reed and Greg Russo just 5:39 into the first period.  Johnson & Wales would answer at the 12:36 mark of the first when senior co-captain Domenic Recchia (Sterling Heights, Mich.) scored a power play goal when he put in a pass from sophomore Ian DePasquale (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior Trevor Jewell (Muskegon, Mich.).  Payden Benning responded for Curry, however as he connected on a pass from Steven Mohler at the 17:11 mark to send the host Colonels up 2-1 after the first period of play.

Curry extended their lead to 3-1 on a power play goal by Ryan Barlock at the 16:12 mark.  JWU once again responded when senior All-American Jeremiah Ketts (Foristell, Mo.) fed a pass to Recchia who then tallied his second power play goal of the evening to make the score 3-2 with just over two minutes left in the period.  Curry took the one goal lead after two periods of play.

Curry went up 4-2 just 4:19 on a goal by Steven Mohler.  Once again the Wildcats responded as junior Erick Vos (Kalamazoo, Mich.) put in a goal with assists from Jewell and Recchia.  With just 1:32 left on the clock, Casey Brugman put Curry ahead 5-3.  After Curry was called for back-to-back penalties, the Wildcats pulled the for the 6-3 man-advantage and were able to capitalize on the advantage at the 19:50 mark on Vos' second goal of the evening.  It wasn't enough however as Curry was able to hold on for the 5-4 victory.

Junior Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, Ohio) made 45 saves in net for JWU while senior Derek Mahoney had 27 stops in the win for Curry.

With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 13-8-3 for the year and 7-4-2 in the ECAC Northeast while Curry improves to 13-10-2 on the year, 11-3-0 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 25th when they travel to Western New England for the first round of the 2012 ECAC Northeast Championship.
