Hockey Downs Suffolk, 3-1

The hockey team downed Suffolk University, 3-1 in an ECAC Northeast contest at Steretti Arena in the North End of Boston on Wednesday evening.

The Wildcats opened the scoring game just 4:03 into the first period when junior Danny Kaufmann (Scotch Plains, N.J.) put in a pass from senior All-American Jeremiah Ketts (Foristell, Mo.) and fellow senior captain Domenic Recchia (Sterling Heights, Mich.).  Suffolk tied the game at the 9:03 mark of the first on a power play goal from James Chamness.  The two teams would head to the locker room tied 1-1 after the first period of play.

After battling through the majority of the second period in a 1-1 tie, JWU scored what would prove to be the game winning goal at the 19:26 mark when junior Erick Vos (Kalamazoo, Mich.) scored with an assist from sophomore Ian DePasquale (Buffalo, N.Y) on a power play for the 2-1 lead.  Then Wildcats then wrapped up the scoring just 3:52 into the third period when Ketts scored with an assist from Recchia to propel JWU to the 3-1 victory.

Freshman Brad Atkinson (Huntington Beach, Calif.), making his first career start also recorded his first career victory as he made 26 saves in the victory for JWU while Cam Kelly had 26 saves in the setback for Suffolk.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now 11-5-2 for the year and 5-1-1 in the ECAC Northeast while Suffolk falls to 2-13 on the year, 0-7 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 28th when they host Curry for an ECAC Northeast contest at 6:45 p.m.
