Hockey Skates To 3-3 Tie With Tufts

The hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie against Tufts in the opening game of the Codfish Bowl, hosted by UMass Boston on Friday afternoon.  Tufts advanced to the championship game of the tournament with a 1-0 win in the shootout.

Tufts took the early lead when a power play goal by Garrett Sider just 3:44 into the game made the score 1-0.  Tufts took the one goal lead into the locker room after the first period of play.  The Jumbos extended their lead to 2-0 at the 15:09 mark of the second stanza on a power play goal by Dylan Plimmer.  JWU closed the gap to 2-1 late in the second period when sophomore Justin Decowski (Hamilton, N.J.) put in a pass from sophomore Ian DePasquale (Buffalo, N.Y.) and junior net minder Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, Ohio) with just :29 seconds left in the period.

Senior Tony Galante (Buffalo, N.Y.) knotted the game at 2-2 at the 6:42 mark of the third period after he tallied a goal with assists to junior Jason Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and junior Ryan Kelly (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).  Tufts regained the advantage at the 12:42 mark of the third on a goal by David Carson.  It would be a short lived lead, however as junior Trevor Jewell (Belgrade, Mont.) put in a shot from fellow junior Jason Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and senior Domenic Recchia (Sterling Heights, Mich.) with just under three minutes left in regulation.  The game ended in a 3-3 tie and both teams battled through a scoreless overtime before Tufts took the 1-0 win in the shootout.

Junior Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, Ohio) made 53 saves for JWU while Scott Barchard had 33 stops for Tufts.

With the tie Johnson & Wales is now 7-3-2 while Tufts is 4-5-1 on the season.  The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 7th when they take on the loser of the UMass Boston vs. Southern New Hampshire contest in the consolation game of the tournament at 1:00 p.m.
