Hockey Posts 6-4 Victory Over Becker

The hockey team posted a 6-4 victory against Becker in an ECAC Northeast contest on the road on Wednesday evening.

JWU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior Shane Viola (Oaklyn, N.J.) scored just 2:29 into the contest.  The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 less than a minute later on a goal by sophomore Adam Bolotin (Vernon Hills, Ill.) at the 3:12 mark.  The Wildcats continued to control the action and went up 3-0 on an unassisted tally by junior Jeremiah Ketts (Foristell, Mo.) at the 17:11 mark.  JWU took the three goal lead into the locker room after the first period of play.

Becker would finally get on the board just 1:26 into the second stanza when a power play goal by Dan Kane cut the lead to 3-1.  JWU responded quickly, however and went up 4-1 on a goal by sophomore Jason Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) at the 7:38 mark.  The Wildcats struck again quickly and extended their advantage to 5-1 less than a minute later on a goal an unassisted goal by freshman Eddie Patterson (Ciniminson, N.J.) at the 8:03 mark.  That goal would later prove to be the game-winner.   JWU took a commanding 5-1 lead into the locker room after two periods of play.

Becker closed the gap early in the third period after a goal by James Gordon at the 6:07 mark cut the lead to 5-2.  The Hawks continued to chip away at the lead and a goal by Jarrod Clark at 7:36 made it a 5-3 game.  A power play goal by Becker's Brian Murray at the 16:24 mark would then make the score 5-4.  That would be as close as Becker would get, however as Pietrasiak's power play goal at the 19:51 mark propelled JWU to the 6-4 victory.

JWU sophomore Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, Ohio) made 31 saves in the victory while Jake Rosenthal had 19 stops for Becker in the setback.

With the win Johnson & Wales is now 12-9-1 overall and 9-2-0 in the ECAC Northeast and pulled into first place in the league standings while Becker falls to 8-11-3 for the season, 5-3-0 in league play.  JWU will return to action on Saturday, February 12th when they host Western New England for an ECAC Northeast contest at 7:20 p.m.
