Johnson & Wales Hockey Falls to UMass Boston, 3-1

Boston, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision against UMass Boston in the opening round of the Codfish Bowl on the road on Tuesday evening.

After battling through a scoreless first period, UMass Boston got on the board first when Michael Crowder tallied an unassisted goal at the 16:11 mark. The host Beacons took the 1-0 lead into the locker room after two periods of play.

Johnson & Wales responded midway through the third stanza after freshman Jason Pietrasiak (Shrewsbury, Mass.) notched his eighth goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1. UMass Boston regained the lead at the 16:05 mark on a goal by Brett Calhoun and an empty net goal by Gentry Zollars with just one second remaining propelled the Beacons to the 3-1 victory.

Freshman Jake Menzel (St. Louis, Mo.) had 50 saves in the setback for Johnson & Wales while Ryan Donovan had 24 stops in the win for UMass Boston.

With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 2-8 for the season while UMass Boston improves to 5-2-1. The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, December 30th when they take on Southern New Hampshire in the consolation game of the Codfish Bowl tournament, starting at 2:00 p.m.
