WINTHROP, Mass. – During its six-game winning streak, the Johnson & Wales University men's basketball team has gotten a spark from freshman Nate Patenaude. For the second time in three weeks, he was recognized by the conference office with GNAC Rookie of the Week honors.
Patenaude is the first Wildcat to receive the award since Jarell Lawson on January 26, 2015. Jaqhawn Walters, from Albertus Magnus was named Player of the Week.
Last week the Smithfield, RI native averaged 18.7 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 53.8% from the field. After scoring 17 and 13 points in wins over Saint Joseph's and Lasell, he exploded for a 26-point, 20-rebound performance against Rivier. It marked the most points by a JWU rookie since Tom Garrick in 2012, and Patenaude is the first JWU player with at least 20 points and 20 boards since Quarry Greenaway reached the feat against Emmanuel on January 19, 2015.
Johnson & Wales is on the road Tuesday when the Wildcats take on Albertus Magnus at 7 p.m.
