Men’s Basketball Heads To Ramapo For NCAA Division III Championship

The men’s basketball team (20-8), the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Champions, will be headed to Ramapo College in New Jersey for the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship on Friday, March 4th at 7:30 p.m.  The Wildcats (20-8) will take on host Ramapo at 7:30 p.m.  The other game in the bracket will see Buffalo State (21-6) from the SUNYAC take on Gwyned Mercy (21-6) from the CSAC.

The Wildcats are led by junior Lamonte Thomas (Providence, R.I.), the 2011 GNAC Player of the Year.  For the season, Thomas led all of NCAA Division III with 30.4 points per game.  He also led the GNAC in assists with 6.1 assists per contest while his 6.5 rebounds were tops on the team.  Senior Darren Faust (Queens, N.Y.), also an all-GNAC selection, added 14.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest for the Wildcats.  He led the squad in steals with 2.1 per game while his 1.2 blocks per game was fifth in the conference.  Junior Calvin Jones (Providence, R.I.) rounds out the double-figure scorers for the Wildcats, averaging 12.2 points and 5.2 boards per contest.

Ramapo earned an at-large bid to the NCAA’s after posting a 19-6 record.  The Roadrunners are led by Ahmad Hassan with 18.2 points per game while Elgin Brown is adding 11.6 points and 7.9 rebounds on the season.  The squad fell to Montclair State in the opening round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs.
