- WESTFIELD, Mass. - A scoring flourish in the second half propelled the Johnson & Wales University field hockey team to victory on Tuesday. The Wildcats beat Westfield State, 6-2, for their first win of the year.

After Westfield State got on the board at the 4:21 mark of the first half, the Wildcats evened the game 10 minutes later. Gabriella Catania's (West Milford, N.J.) shot hit the post, but Natalie Rivas (Andover, N.J.) was there to collect the rebound and pass it Adriana Scala (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) who scored for the second time in three games.
JWU didn't wait long to get on the board in the second half. Senior Giovanna Ciavardoni (Latham, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the first time this season just seven minutes in to put the Wildcats up 2-1.
Riva scored twice in the second half to put the game out of reach. Off a penalty corner at the 48:50 mark, she deflected the ball into the net for her first collegiate goal then three minutes later put back a rebound to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Wildcats dominated offensively with a 22-8 advantage in shots and 11-5 margin in penalty corners. Goalkeeper Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, Mass.) only had to make two saves to record her first win.
Johnson & Wales is on the road Saturday to take on Simmons at 11 am.
