PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Every goal in the field hockey GNAC opener between Johnson & Wales University and Lasell College was scored in a five-minute span. Unfortunately for the hosts, they came out on the short end as the Wildcats fell 2-1 to the Lasers on Thursday.
Lasell: 1-0, 0-0 GNAC
Johnson & Wales: 0-1, 0-0 GNAC
The Lasers got on the board with two goals in 34 seconds. Leah Sullivan scored off a rebound in the 29th minute then took a crossing pass from Samantha Taylor to put the visitors up 2-0.
Johnson & Wales fought back to get a goal just before halftime. After a penalty corner, McKayla Weaver (Enfield, Conn.) got the ball out of the scrum and put it in the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.
Neither team could break through for a goal in the second half though they had several opportunities with a combined 19 shots in the final 35 minutes. JWU keeper Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, Mass.) made six of her 14 saves – the second-highest total of her collegiate career – in the second half. Her Lasell counterpart Denise Landry made nine saves including several in the final minutes of the game.
Johnson & Wales is off until Tuesday when it travels to Westfield State for a 7 p.m. contest.
