MYRTLE BEACH, SC – A big sixth inning propelled the Johnson & Wales University baseball team to victory on Thursday during the team's spring break trip. The Wildcats defeated John Jay, 8-3, at the Ripken Experience Complex.
John Jay: 1-3
Johnson & Wales: 2-1
JWU got the scoring started with a pair of runs in the third when Rob Ballinger doubled to right field to score Nick Lloyd and Steve Rocchio. Ballinger went 2 for 2 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Tim Lombardi broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth with a two-run home run that scored Edison Mercado. Will Fritz and Francisco Diaz drew walks then Ballinger delivered a two-run triple that scored Fritz and pinch runner Pat Fleming.
Seven runs were more than enough support for JWU starter Rich Marshall to pick up his first victory. He only surrendered two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
The Wildcats return to the diamond on Friday to play Fredonia at 6 p.m.
