MYRTLE BEACH, SC – With most of last year's starting lineup gone due to graduation, Johnson & Wales University baseball coach John LaRose wasn't quite sure what to expect from the Wildcats in their season opener. JWU got the 2018 campaign off to a great start with an 11-0 victory over York at the Ripken Experience Complex.
Johnson & Wales: 1-0
The Wildcats got a great pitching performance from senior Keith Grant. He threw eight shutout innings, striking out seven while only surrendering five hits and two walks. Grant did not allow a runner to get past second base.
JWU broke open the game with a seven-run ninth inning. Outfielder Rob Ballinger had a two-run single then Rodriguez added a two-run double. In his JWU debut, Rodriguez went 3 of 5 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Johnson & Wales is back on the field Tuesday to take on York at 2 p.m.
