LYNN, Mass. – A great run through the GNAC Tournament came to an end on Sunday for the Johnson & Wales University baseball team. The Wildcats dropped a 1-0 decision to Suffolk in the conference championship game.
Johnson & Wales: 23-19
JWU's best chances to score came in the second and eighth innings. An Armani Henderson (Johnston, RI) singled moved Edison Mercado (Providence, RI) to second but the inning was ended with a double play.
Henderson stroked a one-out double in the eighth and moved up on a ground out, but he was stranded on third. Henderson had two of JWU's three hits and senior Ryan Cabral (Scituate, RI) had the third.
The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Matt Brenner got a leadoff single against JWU starter James Smiegocki (Lambertville, NJ) then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt. Luke Ronchi got a single to left field that scored Brenner with the eventual winning run.
Smiegocki only gave up one run but was saddled with the loss. He surrendered four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Head coach John LaRose brings back four of his top five hitters for next season as well as two starting pitchers. He'll have to replace his entire starting infield as well as starting pitchers Lane Compton and Keith Grant.
